Vasilopita is traditionally part of the new years celebration New years eve is approaching and apart from the food and drink, the Vasilopita is the center of attention. Vasilopita pronounced vah-see-LO-pee-tah, is the Greek lucky new years cake that has a coin hidden in it and is cut at midnight.

Vasilopita is a New Years Day bread or cake in Greece and many other areas in eastern Europe and the Balkans which contains a hidden coin or trinket which gives good luck to the receiver, like the Western European. A delicious vasilopita recipe (Greek New Years cake) infused with the aromas of oranges and garnished with a thick and glossy vanilla glaze! Vasilopita is a traditional Greek cake served at midnight on New Years Eve to celebrate the life of Saint Basil.

The Ingredients needed to make Vasilopita the traditional New Year’s Eve Greek Cake:
  1. You need 4 cups of shifted All Purpose Flour
  2. It’s 2 cups of Sugar
  3. Prepare 6 teaspoons of Baking Powder
  4. It’s 6 of Eggs
  5. Prepare 250 grams of Butter
  6. It’s 1 1/2 cups of Milk
  7. You need 2 of Vanilla powders or 1 tablespoon Vanilla extract
  8. Prepare 25 grams of Cognac 🙂 (optional)
  9. It’s 125 grams of Almonds cut in half
  10. You need of Sugar Powder for Topping

A very traditional Greek Cake that celebrates the life of Saint Basil. Usually served at New Year, it is quick and delicious at any time. My family preferred it to the traditional vasilopita bread. Vasilopita - Greek New Years Cake

Step to make Vasilopita the traditional New Year’s Eve Greek Cake:
  1. In a large bowl add in the shifted flour, sugar and baking powder.
  2. Add in the room temperature butter and Vanilla.
  3. Beat ingredients and slowly start to add in the eggs, and milk.
  4. Continue to beat and add in the almonds and cognac.
  5. In a buttered baking pan add 1 teaspoon of flour to cover the bottom and sides of the pan.
  6. Pre heat oven at 180 degrees…and pour batter into baking pan and bake for 50 minutes and until golden brown. Top with Sugar Powder and INDULGE!!! 🙂
